Analyzing 4 Postcards


This postcard shows a very lost person. The picture looks as if the person
is a young girl, looking up to the sky for advice. She is surrounded by a field of green, and she is also green, and it seems like it is swallowing her up. She does not know what to do with herself, and says she does not know what she believes anymore. A lot of times with children, they slowly lose sight of what they once believed in. Whether it be Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, or just knowing what a "friend" is.

The font looks like clippings out of a newspaper. They are very rough, and none if is straight. Especially the last word, "anymore". It is like it is falling off and away from the rest of the sentance. Making me believe that is they way that she feels about her life, that is she falling away from what she once believe in. She is just a very confused girl looking up to the sky, maybe a God for help.

This postcard looks like a lot of fun, but in reality it isn't. You see just a big group of people dancing, drinking, talking, and having fun together. But then the text at the bottom tells you otherwise.

The first thing you see is the picture of the people, and then in the bottom right corner you find the text, that doesn't exactly match up to the picture. The main words or phrases stand out by being in purple, while the rest of it is in black. The words that stand out are the real secret that this person is trying to get out and that is why they chose a brighter color for them. This person has a much different attempt to making this card than the previous one I did, because they are opposites. The previous one shows what their secret is, you can tell they are confused. Whereas this one is tricking you at first by making you think nothing is wrong with this photo.

This postcard has two feelings in one. The picture of the turkey is nicely laid out on a plate with some garnishing, and somebody about to carve it. Then the picture of the turkey is taped sloppily on top of a dingy white piece of paper that says "We're only coming out of guilt."

The handwritten text shows that it is personal, because the person that may see this will know who it is from. The white piece of paper with the writing on it show that the person does not really care, and doesn't feel very good about going to Thanksgiving. I think it is very interesting the way they made this postcard because you can tell from the picture that this person(s) are just putting on a beautiful show, when in reality they feel more like the dingy white paper.

This postcard instantly stuck out as sad. This person is hiding underneath their welding mask to hide from their reality of life, and to keep that they are not happy a secret from everybody around them. This is a boring postcard. The person is standing in front of a bland white background, and the writing is small . This shows that they are not satisfied with their life and there is nothing interesting or exciting about it because of the bland colors.

The welding mask looks like a weird face, which may represent the way this person sees them. Maybe odd, or uncomfortable, because this is not what a person would wear or look like on a normal daily basis.

Analyzing a Wartime Poster

There are always many different interpretations of war posters, or any posters, and they all depend on the person who is looking at it. Very rarely will you find that everybody gets the same feeling from a poster. The whole point of a poster, I think, is to attract attention to all different kinds of people, not just one certain group. That is also the reason there are so many different types of war posters; so everybody will be attracted to at least one of them and be persuaded to join the Army/Navy etc. which is the whole purpose of these posters.

The third poster on the first page (pg. 338), where a big hand pointing has broken through a red and white striped background and has the text "Are YOU Doing All You Can?", is very interesting to me. There is a lot more to this poster than most people think when they first look at it. You have to think about the different kinds of colors, texts and fonts, and photographs that the creators used and why.

For starters, the background is red and white striped, just like the American flag. On the arm of the hand it looks as though he is wearing an outfit that is very patriotic, with blue background, white stars, and a red and white striped band around his wrist. The reason these colors are used is to attract the attention to the American person, someone who is very patriotic, loves their country, and is hopefully willing to fight for it. The colors are a very important piece in the poster because it really does catch the eye, because these colors are something that all, or most Americans identify with.

The hand that is breaking through the background is very big and one of the main points of the poster. When you look at the poster, it is the first thing you see, something pointing directly at you. It gives the viewer the feel that the man is pointing at you, and only you.

The text is big and the second thing I see after the pointing hand. The "YOU" is much bigger than the rest of the statement, and with black outlining the letters, and I believe that is so the viewer feels like the poster is talking to them; "YOU, yes YOU" kind of vibe. It also helps to stick out more with the black outlining so people will see if first and feel that is the most important word in the poster. "Are YOU Doing All You Can" with the big hand pointing at you definitely gives you an intimidating feel. It makes you feel as if you are not doing all that you can, and you can do more by joining the Army/Navy etc.

As you can see, wartime posters are all very different in the ways that they portray themselves, but I think one of the biggest factors I see in a lot of these posters are intimidation. The first four are all very intimidating, which may scare people into joining the forces, which is a very interesting, and yet successful way to go about recruitment.

Uncle Sam

In this war poster, "Uncle Sam" is pointing at you and staring into your eyes which makes you feel as if you are connected with him, and he cares only about you. "I WANT YOU FOR U.S. ARMY" can make the viewer feel special, like the man knows that you would do a great job in the army. The YOU is in all red, instead of black, which makes the YOU stand out and make it more of a personal approach. The whole poster is in red, white, and blue which gives the viewer a patriotic feel, so it would attract to the people who are very patriotic. Also, Uncle Sam looks intimidating which makes you feel like if you do not join, you will be in trouble.

Woman U.S. Navy

In this war poster, there is a woman looking very seductive, which would help attract men to join the Navy. She is a representation of what you would be protecting if you joined the Navy. She is wearing the Navy uniform as if it is protecting. The main words are underlined and are red which makes them stand out. The word want and you are both double underlined and you is bigger than I want, because it is trying to focus on you.

Analyzing Movie Posters

Movie posters are made by the creators to attract audiences of all different types. All countries have their own way of advertising movies and each way can give you a different feel, even if it is about the same movie. These posters are made to attract these people to take a break, sit down, relax and watch a good movie.

The four movie posters are all very different, but they represent the same movie. Them being different shows that each country has their own way of representing the movie. The first, second, and fourth ones all have pictures of the characters and colors with more of a positive vibe, whereas the third one has a very different approach, with a skull and dark colors that gives you a scary vibe. The first poster gives off a secretive, mysterious vibe, and the second and fourth give off more of a romantic vibe. I believe the reason this is done is to attract all different kinds of viewers to the movie.

The way I first look at each poster is by reading it in a left to right, top to bottom motion, which in all of the posters the first thing I read is the actors and actresses names. That shows that the actors and actresses may be what attracts most people to this movie.

The colors in the first poster tend to catch my eye because of the contrasting colors. The black background with the yellow, white, blue, and red colors attracts my eyes to it. The second poster also attracts my eye because of the bold, bright colors in the background. The handwritten style of writing also attracts me because it is big and black and gives you more of a relaxed feel that makes me want to go see the movie. The third poster does not attract my eyes because of the colors; it is very boring, black and white. The thing that I am attracted to first is the blue and red target in the middle of the forehead of the skull. This poster does not really give me any idea on what this movie may be about, so it does kind of interest me and makes me want to go see it. The fourth movie poster has the photograph of the couple very big and taking up most of the poster. What is interesting is how small the actors and actresses names are off to the side, which is much different then the other three, where they are part of the main focus. I think pictures help attract an audience more because you do not have to read anything, you just see a photograph and you can base your opinion upon that. It is quick and easy, and that is what people want. They do not want to sit and read something long to decide if they want to see a movie.

Statement of Purpose
Audience:

The audience I will be focusing on are people with privacy issues. These people may be living with somebody who invades their space, like a family member, or sharing the same living area with someone, like a dorm room. The audience will be either male or female, and I will be mainly focusing on people between the ages of 13-20, because I will be handing out the brochures at junior highs, high schools, and colleges.

Context:

The audience I will be instructing will most likely be stressed out and frustrated because they are having issues with privacy. The audience will read my instructions in a number of places. They may be in their dorm room, or room in their house, in a classroom, in their car etc.

Purpose:

The purpose of this is to help people with their issues of privacy by designing an instruction set that will give people different situations of privacy issues and what to do to deal with those issues. I will give different situations and list advice and instructions to help fix the problem.

Statement of Purpose

I want to help people who are in a stressful situation that are dealing with issues of privacy with the people they live with. I will do this by giving them instructions in an instruction set/brochure on how to let people know what is and is not private, and how to protect their personal items. I do not want people to take my instruction set as rude, or criticizing, so I will be giving them helpful, friendly advice for solving their issues with examples of my own experience.

Design Plan

People all around deal with privacy issues, whether it be with a parent or sibling invading their bedroom, or sharing a living space with somebody. Some people have a hard time dealing with privacy issues, and that is where I come in. I will be instructing these people on how to deal with these issues, and solve the problems that they have with the other people. People are usually pretty frustrated when dealing with their privacy being invaded, so I hope to relieve them of some stress by giving them good, personal advice.

I will be making a brochure for everybody that has issues with privacy. I will mainly be focusing on teenagers and college students, because they most likely either live with an invading parent or sibling, or live in a dorm room or apartment with a roommate. I want the audience to realize that they are not the only ones who deal with these issues so I will make the brochure with my personal experiences and experiences from others around me. I will make the brochure with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions that will be easy and quick to read and understand, because people do not have the time for a long, boring lecture on what to do.

I will be using colorful images and fonts to attract people’s attention to the brochure in the beginning, and then they will want to read it if they see what it is on, and that it is made in an easy, fast read. I will do the majority of the brochure by hand, to give the audience a relaxed, friendly, stress-free feeling.

TESTING: As I progress in making my brochure, I will let students, teachers, friends, and family read over it and give me some advice on what they think I could improve on. By the end of this, I hope to have a fun, easy, inviting and educational brochure for all the stressed out and frustrated people out there.

The first ad that I chose was the "Dove Cream Oil Body Wash". It describes an extremely moisurizing body wash in three different types, that are supposed to appeal to three different needs of people. This ad is obviously directed towards women. The colors are light and pretty and invite the reader to try the product out. I believe I see a syllogism in the ad because they are saying (secretly) that if you are a woman, and a woman who loves moisture then there is no excuse not to get the product, because there are three levels of moisture for people to choose from.

The second ad that I chose was a Cheerios ad/promotion on how they are good for your heart health. They are directing this ad/promotion towards women, because the money goes to WomenHeart. This is somewhat of a "problem-solution arrangement" because they are getting people aware that there is a problem with women having heart disease, and their solution is to eat Cheerios everyday which with help your heart health, and it will donate money to the WomenHeart fund.

The instruction sets that we found to be most encouraging in making us feel smart and competent was the "Nomadic Furniture" because it was very simple and straight forward. It was easy to understand and they were friendly in the way they wrote the instructions. The "Semaphore" also gave us confidence because they were teaching us a new way to communicate, in an easy way. Also, the fire extinguisher was very simple and easy to understand. The instructions were good because it was short, and the pictures could keep you calm.
The instruction set explaining the Japanese Onomatopoetic with pictures is a little bit confusing, because the pictures do not correspond with the explanation very well. The pictures are a little bit off from the definitions.
The "Arabic Calligraphy" was very conplex. There was too much small writing, too much for just beginning to learn. When trying to learn something new and seeing a lot of small font writing does not make you want to read and learn it. The explosions was confusing because it is not clearly stated what is going on in the picture, and it is in another language to begin with.
The way the authors go about instructing you are appropriate for their context, but that does not mean that it is easy to understand. The "Arabic Calligraphy" is probably a very complex writing style, so it would need very complex instructions.

Exercises pg. 31 & 55. Ch. 12 questions

a) Chapter 2 exercise #1 Page 31
When I applied to my first job, I wrote down that I had three years of Spanish experience. To some, this would come off as I was very good, maybe even fluent. The three years of experience were in school...with some long summer vacations off. My job ended up wanting to use my experience for their needs... I was asked to give a message to the floor cleaners (who only spoke Spanish).
  1. I knew that I had to tell them something with enough detail for them to understand what I was saying. I was trying to leave work, so I rushed, and they ended up just having a little smirk on their face, although they seemed to have understood what I was trying to say. If I would have thought it through a little bit more than I would have a more accurate sentence to tell them without getting laughed at!
  2. Although I did know my audience, and what it was going to be like speaking to only Spanish speaking people with my not so fluent Spanish, I still could have thought a little bit more about them. If I would have thought that they probably understood that fact that I did not speak much Spanish, they I wouldn't have been so pressured to say it perfectly.
  3. With my timing, I should have been a little more relaxed. It was at the end of my shift so I wanted to get out of there, and having to come up with a Spanish sentence to tell the guys, I just felt like rushing, not caring about what I would be saying.
  4. If I would have taken a couple more minutes to gather my thoughts, I would have been able to come up with a thorough, sensible sentence for the two men!
  5. During that time, I chose to write it down on a piece of paper, because I was embarrassed to tell them orally. I think if I would have spoken it to them instead of writing it down, that they would not have thought it was so amusing.
  6. There was no specific order for anything. This step is not very useful for this specific communication problem.
  7. I didn't test the sentence out. I quickly jotted it down and gave it to them without reading over it, or saying it out loud to hear if it was in the right tenses. I know that if I did test it out first before doing it, I would have been able to make a change, and be more confident in telling them.

Overall, if I would have used these seven steps, my communication would have turned out a lot better, and more of what I wanted. And they wouldn't have laughed at me like I was an idiot!

Chapter 2 exercise #2 Page 55
After reading about the rhetorical process, I realized that I have been going about composing my communication completely different than I should. I thought about the methods that I use, and noticed that I do not have a method. I have not composed my communication in any certain way that I could tell about.

I definitely think that the "testing" part of the process will be most useful to me, because I have never really made up a rough sketch of my ideas and given it to my desired audience for feedback before the final product is complete. This way I will be able to get more feedback before I get too far into the process of composing, and it will help me become more confident as the project continues to develop.

The details of production will probably be the most challenging for me to get used to because I do not normally brainstorm and come up with ideas on how I should go about my projects. I do believe though that it will all be useful information.

The part of the production that will help me be most creative is the medium part. When there is a chance to choose the way you would like to communicate, you should take advantage of the fact that you are able to show your creative side to the audience. This will also be a challenge for me though because I have always had a hard time with my artistic side. I always end up with something that I am happy with, but the process of getting there to the end is difficult.

b) Chapter 12-"Nomadic Furniture"

  • The people writing the "Nomadic Furniture" gives off the attitude that they are trying to not only help people build inexpensive furniture, but also doing it in the easiest way, with the least amount of supplies. They are trying to give the readers a simple life, while still having the elegance and colorful feel.
  • After reading this instruction set, I felt that the authors were trying to give the audience a friendly vibe. They wanted to become friends, and be truthful to the readers by saying it's not the most comfortable chair, but it is elegant. By using the nickname of the author, that shows they are trying to give a more relaxed feel to the reader, and not so uptight with strict, formal names.
  • I believe that handwritten instructions goes along with giving the reader and relaxed, simple feel. It gives the reader confidence that even they can do it. If the instructions were typed and the images done by computer, the reader could get a harder vibe, making them feel that the instructions are not as easy as they really are.
  • If the instructions were done on the computer, it would give the reader a feeling of perfection, that they had to do this perfect or else it would not turn out right. I believe that it would make the reader more self-conscience about how they would put the furniture together and if they were doing it right.
  • The diagram and instructions were a little bit confusing for me. I think it would help if the words were in a numbered form, to separate one step from the other. It was a good diagram though because it had all of the inches and the sides were labeled to correspond with the written instructions.
  • I want to give a detailed, yet simple and relaxed instruction set to readers for inexpensive, elegant and simple furniture.

2 Letters to the College President

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Shay Hemp, and I am writing to you to express my concern and feelings for the connection of Cascadia Community College and the campus library. To many people, the library may seem as though it is directly in the center of the two schools, Cascadia Community College and University of Washington-Bothell. This may seem true to the people who never actually go to the library, but for me I see it much differently.

Every day I am at school I make my way to the library at least once. Me, being a student coming from the Cascadia part of the campus, feel it is much more distanced than it is to the UW. Many new students probably do not even realize that the library is for use for BOTH schools, because it is connected to the UW buildings, and separated from the Cascadia building.
Not only is it confusing for some, it is also cold! The Winter course has just begun here at Cascadia and that calls for frigid temperatures, and wet days. I feel that if you build an enclosed bridge or walkway connecting Cascadia to the library, many more people would use it, especially in this time of year. Not too many people enjoy walking in the cold to get to the library, especially when they would rather not be there.

I feel that this would be very beneficial to invest in something along these lines to help the students of Cascadia. It would make it much more apparent to the new students that they are able to use the library as well, and make it easier for people like me, who go everyday, to enjoy getting there!

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Shay Hemp and I have been hearing some interesting concerns about the library on our campus and the Cascadia buildings. Many people are not happy with the way the library and Cascadia buildings are set up, because of them not letting the students know that it is for both schools, not just the UW (which it comes across that way because it is much closer). The ideas I have heard around campus are to build an enclosed walkway or bridge connecting the library to the Cascadia buildings. Personally, I never go to the library. I do not like going when I do not need to, and I especially do not like going in the wintertime when it is cold, or in the fall when it is wet. I would much rather get in my car and go home!

Although I hate going to the library, and could not really care less about what goes on with it, I think that it would be more appealing to people like me to go if there was an enclosed walkway to keep me warm. Also to let me know that the library is for use for both schools.
I do not know many people, mainly just my friends and I, that go to the library in the first place, but I will tell you that if I would have to go someday, I would much rather go through an enclosed walkway.

You as Communicator

Being a good communicator is a challenge for many people, including myself. There is always room for improvement no matter how successful you are at being a communicator, or anything at all for that matter. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is that you are strong and weak at, but once you come in conclusion to what those things may be, the learning and growing process just begins.
I believe that I am an average communicator. Not too good, not too bad. I enjoy talking to and with people when I am in a situation that I am comfortable with. I tend to be the most talkative in my family, always trying to keep up a lively conversation. During class when I feel confident with my opinions, I love to open up and let everybody know. I feel that I am decent at writing, from what my past teachers and peers have told me. I enjoy writing, especially when it is something I find interesting. But a quality that I do have is that I can write about things that do not interest me, and still make it a good paper. I keep a journal and write in it when I feel it necessary. A more artistic way that I have found myself able to communicate in is in scrapbooking. It is a fun and different way to communicate with the people that are viewing your work. You learn how to design in more ways than just writing.

Mostly through school, I never thought that I was a fabulous communicator, and still don't! But it really helped my confidence when I would receive the compliments and praises from my friends, family, and teachers. I feel as though the strongest influences on me as a communicator are all of my teachers. They will never be biased, or scared to hurt my feelings, because they are there to teach me. As much as everyone hates being told what to do, what not to do, and how to do it, it really is the most beneficial things to know in order to become the proud communicator that you want to be.

L.A. Confidential

Double Identities...Good or Bad?

What would life be like with a double identity? Would it make life more interesting, by being able to more than one person, more than just yourself? Empowering, giving you a feeling that you are not able to feel while in your own shoes? Or maybe damaging, where you were given this double identity by someone else, and identity that you did not choose for yourself, and do not want for yourself? There are many different aspects of secrecy and double identities, both positives and negatives. In terms of the film L.A. Confidential, there were different effects on each one of the characters with a double life.

Lynn Bracken, who pretends to be fabulous Veronica Lake, tends to have more of an empowering experience overall. Lynn gets to pretend that she is someone that she is not. Someone beautiful and charming. Someone who all the men want. She is beautiful and gets what she wants, when she wants, all while making the good money that she, and everyone dreams of. Although empowering for Lynn, she is put in a vulnerable place when experimenting with her double identities. She has her "job" as Veronica Lake, but soon that starts interfering with her real life as Lynn when she becomes involved with Bud, who sees her as Lynn Bracken, not Veronica Lake.

On the other side of the spectrum, it is a negative thing for Ed Exley. Everybody at the police station does not have any feelings for Ed, or see that he is a good cop. All he is known for is being "the son of the legendary Preston Exley." This has a negative effect on Ed because people do not know him as his own person. He has to try to make a name for himself throughout the whole movie, so people know him for him and his good police work, not for his father. For the majority of the movie, Ed was working on his own, with most of the men at his work not liking him.

In the end, the double life is more of a negative thing. To begin with Lynn, she had a positive life until the end when it all fell apart. She started to realize that her double life and identity was not coming out the way she planned it. Ed had the reverse effect though. It got better for him in the end. He helped solve the big mystery and succeeded in killing of the "bad guy" in the mystery. It may be empowering in some ways, but in the end, it is more damaging to the person. It will be fun while it lasts, but people will not live in their own shoes and they will not be able to be happy with who they are and what they have, because they have spent so much of their life focusing on this "secret identity"...which could also be known as a "false identity".

Name

1. My name is Shay Hemp. My last name originates from Germany and my first from the Irish or the Jewish.

  • My mother chose my name for me. There was no specific reason for it, she just met someone with the name Shay and really liked it.
  • After researching my name on http://www.behindthename.com/, I discovered that there are two versions of my first name. One is the masculine form which comes from the Irish. The second version is either a masculine or feminine form, which comes from the Jewish. Shay is a variant of Shai, which means "gift" in Hebrew My last name is German.

3. I like my name because I have never had to be in the situation of being in a workplace (school, work etc.) where I had to be identified by my last initial following my first name, unlike many others.

If I were to choose a different name for a "secret identity" I would choose Zara. It is really unique and I've never met anyone with the name before and it would be interesting to live a life with and even more uncommon name than the one I have now.
